Our friends at the Center for Coastal Studies spotted the first mom and calf pair of the season in Cape Cod! Mom Porcia (NARW 3293) and her newborn were seen on Saturday, March 18.
First seen in December off the coast of Georgia, this is Porcia's 3rd documented calf and her first since 2011.On Saturday the CCS right whale aerial survey team spotted the first mother and calf pair to arrive in Cape Cod Bay this year. EGNO 3293/Porcia is a 21-year-old right whale who was first seen with her new calf in late December off the coast of Georgia.
Eleven new right whale calves have been identified this year in the Southeast US (and a 12th calf perished), where they are born. Each surviving calf represents another step toward the population's recovery.
With a large population of right whales present, the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries has placed a seasonal 10-knot speed restriction in Cape Cod Bay from March 1 - April 30 for vessels less than 65 feet long. In addition, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has a complementary 10-knot seasonal speed restriction in and around Cape Cod Bay for vessels 65 feet or greater.
