From terrorist to peacemaker. From prisoner to president. Nelson Mandela gave his life to his people, and the struggle for freedom in South Africa. Under the banner of the African National Congress he stood at the front of a movement, and reached out to the world. He appealed to our sense of justice. He made us want to do the right thing. Few people have been so inspiring to so many.
In this episode of Lives that Changed the World, the men and women who have turned Mandela’s inspiration into action, tell their own stories about how a man gave them the courage to forgive, and the strength to achieve the impossible.
From his daughter, to his jailer on Robben Island, to an AIDS activist, to the Apartheid minister of security – each has a story to tell. The documentary weaves the personal journeys of ten individuals with the story of Mandela’s long walk to freedom, using iconic archival footage to recount key moments in the struggle.
